This amulet is inspired by an ancient Greek coin that pays homage to the god Apollo. Son of Zeus and Leto, Apollo was born on the Greek island of Delos along with his twin sister Artemis. He is one of the most important ancient deities as he was considered the god of the sun, light, health, music, and prophecy. Apollo taught mankind the art of medicine and thus is also known as “the healer”. He is the only major god who retains the same name in both Greek and Roman mythology. The reverse of the coin features the image of a scimitar oryx, a species of antelope that may be the origin of the unicorn legend. In ancient times, they were domesticated and trained to be used as food or sacrificed in religious ceremonies. This species was part of the Roman wealthy's buffet and also a favorite in hunting. |
